chapter one:
this is just a regular girl
rosaline

If my dad found out that I was watching Love Story instead of the first preseason game between the Arizona Cobras and the Carolina Knights, he'd probably disown me.

In his defense, the game had been well hyped, even if it was a preseason game. The long rivalry between the two teams, founded in part due to my dad, gave the game high expectations. Even if it was just the third string quarterback playing with a few rookies and a few young guys looking to get starting jobs for the real thing, I would much rather stick to reality TV. It was just so much more fun, you know.

Well, I guess this time, it would be debatable which of the options would be more fun, since it was likely that there would be fights in both programs. Which, I guess if that's your thing, I would recommend watching the football game.

Plus, there was no better show to watch while sitting at the front desk at the Payton Library, which is where I have been stuck for the better part of my shift today. It's the first week of school, which meant the only people in the library are those of us working here, and the STEM students. That meant that I have had tons of time to stare at my phone, since no one had come over to ask me a question in over an hour.

"Excuse me?"

I must've jinxed myself. Why would I even do that? Everyone knows that if you want to stay bored at work, you never think about how bored you are.

I look up at the person in front of me, some football player who must've come from one of their practices.

"How can I help you?" I ask, pausing the show on my phone and taking out my earbud, attempting to sneakily put it back into it's case.

"I have a room reserved."

Well, this is easy. A simple hand off of a key, attached to the most obnoxiously large piece of PVC, and the player is on his merry way, and I am free to continue my enjoyment of Love Story. I only have like 10 minutes left, and we're getting close to the end of the episode, meaning the jester will be revealed soon.

Personally, I think it's this Alec guy. He seems way too into all of the girls he's been dancing with, and if I was a jester, I would do the same thing. (Basically, the jester in this show is an uncasted bad guy, and if they get a real cast member to choose them at the end of the night, then they win some money and can choose to come into the competition in place of the person who chose them, effectively eliminating their potential match. So much drama!)

Just as we begin to close in on the grand reveal, the shoe ceremony (in true Cinderella fashion, tonight the women will offer magical slippers to their chosen man, signifying the couples going into the first week of the show), my phone rings, putting the show on pause. I frown. Who on Earth is calling me this late?

A quick look at the contact "Dad" (real creative, I know) tells me that I must've forgot that I scheduled a video call with my family. I scan the library, no managers or potential botherers (aka customers or whatever you call people who are at the library in the middle of the night) in sight, so I figure, this is a phone call I can successfully take to kill more time at work. With 40 minutes left in my shift, I'm sure this call could potentially take me right to the end of the work day.
