Adwait stills the moment the question reaches him.

For a brief second, the faint sounds of the highway, the clinking of cups from the stall counter, even the warm smell of the Rajwadi tea: all of it seems to fade into the background.

He didn't expect the question tonight.

Not here.

Not at this place.

Ritika had asked him this only once before, after he returned dealing with Chhabra. At that time too, he had avoided giving her any real answer.

And tonight... nothing has changed.

His fingers tighten slightly around the clay cup as he lowers his gaze for a moment. For a fleeting second, the thought crosses his mind, telling her the truth.

"Just tell her everything." His inner voice screams.

But the thought dies as quickly as it appears. Because the truth is not something he can afford to reveal. Not when the threat that forced him to leave three years ago might still be lurking somewhere in the shadows. And he knows one thing very clearly about himself. He can endure hatred. He can live with misunderstandings. But he cannot take even the smallest risk when it comes to protecting the people he loves.

Especially her.

So he does what he has trained himself to do over the years.

He lies.

"I just wanted some peace. Also, I wanted to focus on building my company properly. Things were getting chaotic here, and I needed distance to concentrate." He says calmly, as if the answer means nothing to him.

The explanation sounds smooth and simple. Even the look on his face mirrors what he said.

Ritika listens without interrupting him.
For a moment she simply watches his face, studying the carefully controlled expression he is wearing.

Then suddenly...

She chuckles.

A quiet, knowing sound that makes Adwait glance at her.

"I knew you wouldn't tell the truth so easily." She says, shaking her head slightly.

There is no anger in her voice. Only a strange mixture of amusement and determination.

"You are one of the most thick-skinned people I know when it comes to hiding things." She adds, resting her elbow casually on the table.

Adwait remains silent.
