Today is my wedding.
I smooth the ivory silk of my gown, the high empire waist resting just below my heart as I catch my reflection. The delicate floral embroidery shimmers against the fabric, trailing down to a heavy, scallop lace hem that brushes the floor with every step. I pull on my opera-length cream gloves, feeling the slight ruching of the satin against my skin, and adjust the pearl drop earrings that dangle from gold bows. A sheer, ruffled cape trails behind me like a cloud of blush-tinted mist, and the ornate filigree of my gold heels clicks softly against the stone.
The bouquet is a collection of my favourites: Oleander, Belladonna, Foxglove and Hemlock.
The church welcomes a serpent and a human wedding, the biggest change the world has ever witnessed. I hold the bouquets in one hand and the other caressing my unborn baby in my womb. The gift we are going to give to the world.
And there he is, standing like a figure frozen in a, beautiful dream. His long black frock coat is buttoned perfectly, the heavy fabric lending him an air of timeless authority. I watch the way the light catches the silver watch chain draping across his dark waistcoat and the stark, clean white of his high-collared shirt. Even his hands are elegant, encased in black leather gloves that fit him perfectly. The only softness in his silhouette is the small white flower pinned to his lapel, a silent match to the ivory of my own dress.
As we both stand, facing each other and the priest standing between us, our smiles can't be stopped. We are giddy, his eyes form tears playing at the edge to fall.
In this immoral world where love out of your clan is a sin equivalent to execution, here we are, holding each other's hands and waiting, waiting for the final act, called marriage.
"You look so ethereal, my love." He murmurs, his voice so thick with emotion.
I blush. "You look clean."
He laughs and we stop when the priest tells us he will start.
And suddenly, the windows of the church get broken and the door gets broken down by the outsiders. The grasp between us tightens but that doesn't last long when a long jagged line forms on my lover's body which lets the blood shower on me.
Screams tear open out of my mouth as I am being bathed by my mate's blood. They killed the priest but all my focus lies on him as he neatly gets two separate folds, lying on either side of each other on the floor.
"Shawn!"
Hands grab me and drag me from the podium and to the aisle. I scratch and kick but everything pales in comparison to them.
I am thrown out of the church like an effortless doll. Dirt lingers on my body but that too cannot hide those red blotches.
I glare through my tears, memorising all of the faces of the crime. We wanted to have the marriage at night due to the full moon being the sole witness of our pure oaths taken tonight. And now the same moon is witnessing a different show.
I protectively hold my hand on my stomach. "What have we done to you?"
One of the humans says, "A sin. We were to be cursed if that happened. Can't let that, will we?" The others follow a laugh.
"And you need to be faced with punishment."
"What kind of?"
They smirk. "The one where you will remember to never think of doing it ever again."
That night I lost everything.
My soon-to-be husband.
My unborn child.
Myself.
But also a promise, destroy everything. Blood pours out of my lower body and with an eye I witness their shadows disappearing.
"W-Will k-i-ll you a-all."
