Passion Rules Reason

A 2009 National Novel Writing Month Novel

Written by: Lily

Author Notes: Its one minute past midnight and here I am yet again, and I can't even believe its here! I want to dedicate this story to not only the authors that I have read and have grown to love but to the authors that are not published the ones that are sitting here tonight at their computers typing away and starting out not only as unpublished authors but as soon to be published authors on one crazy month. I have won two years previously and if there is anything that I have learned is that words become the cornerstone of what matters in this world. This entire world seems so out of place but put a few words together and you can not only begin to understand but discover what life is really about. It puts people together, tears them apart, and brings them right back. So here is my story, its not your average story and by any means but I am more privileged to be able to write this year. Who knew what this year would bring? But I'm about to just only scratch the surface. This story is dedicated to my number one National Novel Writing Month writing buddy, my mother. To a lady that knows more words then anyone could ever imagine, she makes me laugh and I'll always be proud of what she has given to me. She is a very intelligent person and I am very honored to call her my hero. My second dedication goes to my guardian angel, Nikki! She is not only my twin sister but also my other pen holder, she teaches me how to write, where to write and when to never give up. You have taught me how to be a stronger person and to never give up if the going gets tough, I would not only be wearing your wings this month but I will also be flying high thanks to you.

This story includes some shout outs: Chris Batty Nanowrimo father, Paula and Rissa who will be joining me on this journey of long written pages and abandonment of the bookmark kind, Ashley my dear sister, Gracy, Fatima, Hiba, Mir Mir, AJ and countless others who keep me writing. This also includes but its never limited to Tabitha, I miss you like crazy and you light up my life and to my KIDNEY Heather, without you I'd be a plot without a bean. And make that coffee beans please!

Chapter One: Passion

The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say. ~Anaïs Nin

Fall had just fallen over the college campus, students huddled together in the courtyard for warmth and you could see the countless Starbucks coffee cups being held by students and professors alike. It was not a rare occurrence to see the leaves fly up and land astray in someone's hair. She was huddled over by the lamp light minding her own business when a guy with dark black hair kissed cheek and went on his way. She was still in her morning clothes, and she was heading towards her car.

I picked a stray red leaf off of my car as I settled into the driver's seat. Waiting for the car to warm up I blew hot air into my hands before turning the ignition on. I double checked my rear-view mirror and pulled out of my parking spot. I hit the highway fast ready to start my day, I had class in a few hours and I intended to make a good first impression. I had only just been at this school for a few days and I was more then happy to find that my boyfriend was going to the same school as me since I had transferred over from the college of Marin but it really wasn't what I was looking for. Talking to countless other students I think I knew I should have just stayed with my gut feeling and enrolled my first choice into Dominican University of California. But I guess the thing was, my dad went to the college of Marin and I wanted to think that I was able to be part of the 1.3 million student body, but I guess life has a different route for everyone. So here I am as a promising B.A. student in art history on my first trip into town to get Starbucks, so far so good.

I paid my $4.16 for a mocha frappiccino and plopped down into booth and pulled out my laptop. Looking around the room I began to gaze around at the other students with textbooks piled up high, I noticed a very thick volume of advanced marine biology and my eyes almost popped out of my skull. I accidently caught the eye of the girl sitting next to it, straight chestnut brown hair and dimpled cheeks. I smiled slowly and then quickly looked away as I logged into my social networking websites.
