The rest of the week went by in a blur of productivity. Everything ran smoothly! Better than I expected, honestly. Logan, I mean Mr. White, I should say, and I were actually becoming... friends?
I don't know, but I actually liked working here. It felt like I was finally finding my rhythm.
I walked toward his office Friday morning, his coffee already prepared exactly how he likes it. I gave a quick knock.
"Come in," his voice called out. "Ah, Ms. Miller. My favorite person."
"You only say that because I'm the one holding the caffeine," I teased, setting the mug on his desk.
"Well, that is preposterous! how could you think so little of me?"
"I guess you won't mind if I drink this myself, then," I said, reaching for the handle.
"Don't!" Logan's hand shot out, and I raised an eyebrow. "Okay, fine. You win. Now give it to me."
I surrendered the cup and turned to head back to my desk, but he stopped me.
"Oh, and the Big Boss is back. We're heading up to meet with him in about two hours."
"Okay. Sounds good"
I tried to keep my voice casual, but as I walked away, a cold knot formed in my stomach. I don't know why, but I had a very bad feeling.
I spent the next two hours in a state of high-functioning anxiety; organizing Logan's schedule, fielding calls, napping, etc etc...
"hey, come on. we'll go meet him" Mr. White says opening the door waiting for me
"Okay." I stood up, smoothing out my shirt and following him down the hall.
We stepped into the elevator, but instead of going down, Logan pressed the button for the very top.
"He has his own floor?" I asked, watching the number climb.
"Yeah. What did you expect?"
I didn't know what I expected, but the 44th floor was a whole different world. I didn't even know this part of the building belonged to the company. The air up here felt more expensive, colder and just overall fancier
"Wait here," Logan said as we reached a set of massive double doors. "I have to talk to him first."
"Okay. Sounds good"
I wait while they talk, trying not to look as nervous as i feel. That bad fleeing from earlier? Yeah, it's now a whole circus in my stomach.
I go to the cooler, maybe drinking some water will help.
as soon as i start drinking Mr. White interrupts me.
"Ms. Miller..." He paused, watching me. I froze mid-sip. "Swallow."
I did, wiped my mouth, and followed him into the office.
Jesus!
The room was massive. What does one man need all this space for? It was pure, unadulterated showing off. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the entire Seattle skyline. It was giving me serious Christian Grey vibes: a meeting table, a leather couch, a massive TV, and a desk that looked like it was carved from a single block of obsidian.
"Please, have a seat, Ms. Miller."
I'm guessing this is the boss, his voice sounds, authoritative, dominant and familiar..? Way too familiar.
"Please, have a seat Ms. Miller"
The voice hit me first. It was authoritative, dominant, and... familiar. Way too familiar.
I sat in the chair directly in front of the desk, Logan taking the one beside me.
"I don't understand why we need to do this"
Logan said, sounding just as annoyed as I was
Yeah same bro
"I'd like to meet everyone who works for me." I felt the man's gaze on me, heavy and intense. I kept my eyes fixed on my lap, refusing to show him my face yet.
"Look at me, now" he says it calmly but there's that tone. That commanding tone.
I slowly lifted my head.
He raised an eyebrow, his expression shifting into deep thought. I was doing the same, the man in front of me looked like a ghost. My brain was buffering, desperately trying to place the sharp jawline and those dark, deep-ocean eyes.
"I'm sorry, Mr....?" I trailed off. I didn't even know his last name! I was so screwed.
"Easton" he says smoothly "tell me Ms. Miller, what's your first name?"
Wasn't he supposed to already know that?
What kind of CEO doesn't know his own staff..
"Alexis..." I said, the name trailing off as the final puzzle piece clicked into place
"Theodore Easton!" I blurted out.
"Alexis," he said at the exact same time
