DIANA SAT AT HER cluttered desk, the remnants of the previous night's revelry still swirling in her mind. The Garrison had been alive with laughter and clinking glasses, yet beneath the surface, she felt a turbulent sea of emotions. Her colleagues had toasted to payday, but all she could focus on was the cold demeanor of Thomas Shelby.

Now, as she sat in the quiet classroom, the morning light filtering through dusty windows, the weight of Tommy's icy stare haunted her. Why had he been so distant? The warmth from the night before had vanished, leaving her grappling with confusion.

Finn Shelby entered the classroom, his youthful face mirroring the shadows of his older brother. "Miss Woods, can I ask you something?" His voice broke through her reverie, yet all she saw was a younger version of Tommy—cynical yet innocent.

"Sure, Finn. What's the problem?" she replied, her tone sharper than intended. But inside, she felt a flicker of nervousness. Why was she so affected by the Shelby family?

As Finn approached, his eagerness palpable, she noticed the way he nervously fidgeted with his pencil. "I think I solved this math problem, but I'm not sure." His eyes searched hers for approval, and in that moment, she felt a pang of something unfamiliar vulnerability.

Diana's usual sarcasm faltered. She was a woman hardened by loneliness, by the scars of her past,a father who had returned from war only to succumb to illness, leaving her to navigate a world that felt increasingly unwelcoming. She had spent years building walls, determined never to let anyone in again, yet here she was, quaking at the sight of a boy asking for help.

"Let's take a look," she said, forcing a smile that felt foreign. As she leaned over his paper, she couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that she was not just helping Finn, she was also confronting her own fears of connection.

Each scribbled number felt like a step deeper into uncharted territory. Diana had long since steered clear of emotional entanglements, and yet, the presence of the Shelby brothers had stirred something within her that she thought was buried.

"What do you think, Miss Woods?" Finn's innocent question snapped her back to reality.

"Looks good, but check your calculations here," she replied, her voice steadier now. Yet as she watched him smile in relief, she felt a tightening in her chest—was it fear of getting hurt, or the realization that she might actually want to be seen?

Tommy Shelby's mind was a battlefield as he drove through the winding streets of Birmingham, the engine of his black sedan purring quietly beneath him. The city was alive, yet he felt an unsettling emptiness. The weight of his life pressed down on him, a constant reminder of the chaos he had chosen. Today, he was on a simple errand—picking up his youngest brother, Finn, from school.

But this simple task had become complicated by the presence of Miss Diana Woods. She was a fixture in his mind, a cold, enigmatic figure who seemed to embody everything he both desired and detested. Her icy demeanor had intrigued him from the start, yet it also infuriated him. She was a teacher, a protector of innocence, and yet she carried a darkness that mirrored his own.

As he parked outside the school, the familiar sight of children spilling out into the playground brought a fleeting sense of normalcy. Finn was easy to spot, his bright smile cutting through the throng of faces. But as Tommy stepped out of the car, he felt the familiar tension in his chest return.

"Hey, Tommy!" Finn called, running towards him, his backpack bouncing with each step.

"Ready to go?" Tommy asked, ruffling his brother's hair, the warmth of familial love momentarily dispelling the shadows in his mind.

"Yeah! I got an A in math today!" Finn beamed, his youthful enthusiasm infectious.

"Good lad," Tommy replied, his lips curling into a rare smile. But as they turned to leave, he caught sight of Miss Woods standing at the school entrance, arms crossed, her expression as cold as the winter air.

"Miss Woods," he greeted, attempting to bridge the gap between them.

"Mr. Shelby," she replied, her voice devoid of warmth, the way she said his name sending a chill down his spine. She wouldn't look him in the eye, choosing instead to focus on the ground in front of her.

"Finn's done well today," he added, hoping to elicit some response, some flicker of emotion.

"Good to hear," she said curtly, her gaze still averted. The dismissal was palpable, and he felt the sting of rejection.

"Goodbye, Miss Woods!" Finn called cheerfully, waving as they walked away. She didn't respond with no words but only a smile, and the silence hung heavy in the air. Tommy felt a mix of anger and confusion bubble within him. Why did she refuse to engage? What was it about him that made her retreat into herself?

As they drove home, Finn chattered away, oblivious to his brother's turmoil. Tommy nodded along, forcing himself to focus on the road, but his mind wandered back to Diana. He thought of the coldness in her eyes, the way she had turned away from him as if he were nothing more than a phantom.

The memory of the previous week clawed at him, unbidden. He had seen Diana out with her co-workers, the group celebrating payday at a local bar. He remembered walking in to find her laughing, but his heart sank when he saw her with Richard, the man who was obviously pursuing her for months everybody knowing but Diana herself who kept to herself and didn't notice the man until recently. His eyes had narrowed as he noticed Grace, the shy new barmaid, struggling to pour drinks, and he stepped behind the bar to help.

Diana had watched it all, her expression inscrutable, yet he could see the way her stomach churned. The sight of him with another woman—especially one so soft and quiet—had clearly affected her, someone so much different then Diana herself. He had felt that familiar urge to reach out to her, to draw her into his world, but she had been too far away, too wrapped in her own fortress of solitude.

Now, as he pulled into their driveway, the familiar chaos of the Shelby household enveloped him. John and Arthur were already at the table, bickering over some trivial matter, while Ada set the plates. Aunt Polly moved gracefully through the kitchen, her presence grounding in the midst of their stormy lives.

"Look who it is! The big boss and little Finn!" Arthur shouted, a grin splitting his face.

Dinner was filled with the usual banter, but Tommy felt detached, as if he were watching from the outside. The laughter, the shouts, the clinking of silverware all blended into a blurred cacophony. His mind drifted back to Diana: her coldness, her indifference, the way she had turned away from him after their last encounter when he had tried to speak to her about stepping out of the shadows, about finding freedom amidst the darkness.

After dinner, as the shadows lengthened and the house quieted, Tommy retreated to his room. He lit a cigarette, the smoke curling around him like the ghosts of his past. The memories came flooding back—faces of enemies, the bloodshed that haunted him, the weight of decisions he could never take back.

He reached for the opium, a dark comfort that promised to numb the pain. As he settled into bed, the substance coursed through him, blurring the line between reality and dreams. Sleep came slowly, the darkness pressing in around him, the familiar nightmares threatening to pull him under.

But tonight was different.

He found himself in a forest, the trees looming like sentinels. The air was thick, heavy with an otherworldly quality. As he walked, he stumbled upon a serene lake, the water shimmering under the moonlight. It was beautiful yet eerie, an unsettling calm that made his heart race.

And there she was.

Diana stood at the edge of the lake, illuminated by the silvery light. She wore a flowing white robe that glimmered against the darkness, her hair cascading around her shoulders like a halo. She turned slowly, her gaze meeting his, and a small smile crept across her lips.

In that moment, time stood still. The coldness he had felt in her presence melted away, replaced by a warmth that enveloped him. She looked ethereal, almost otherworldly, and for the first time, he saw her vulnerability, the depth of her loneliness reflected in her eyes.

"Tommy," she whispered, her voice like a gentle breeze, calling him closer.

He felt an inexplicable urge to reach out, to bridge the chasm that had grown between them. But as he stepped forward, the dream began to fade, the forest and lake dissolving into shadows.

"Wait!" he called, desperation clawing at his throat. But she only smiled, the distance between them growing until she was lost in the dark.

Tommy awoke with a start, the remnants of the dream still clinging to him like mist. He could still see her smile, the way her eyes shone with a light that cut through his darkness. A longing surged within him, a desire to uncover the layers of the woman who had captivated him so completely, even in dreams.

As he lay back down, he realized the battle was far from over. Diana Woods was a puzzle he needed to solve, a shadow that danced just out of reach. And as he drifted back into sleep, he knew he would confront those shadows, one way or another.
