Chapter 3 ~Steven

“What the hell is going on here?” I shouted over the scuffling of feet and the cries of the reporters.

“Reporters want the scoop on Amy and Alec Cruz.”

“I know I heard on the radio.”

“They want to harass the poor kid into telling them everything about the crash. But if he can’t talk to Grace, Josh and myself how the hell is he supposed to talk to the reporters?”

“You have a point there,” I muttered.

Reporters kept lusting for our comments but we said nothing. One reporter closer to the front attempted to duck under my arm but I grasped the scruff of his neck and hurled him at the wall on the opposite side of the door.

“Everyone back away!” I shouted over the commotion.

Silence stunned the throng of reporters but more camera lights and questions where soon heard and seen.

“Why would they want to see them? Don’t they know she is in a critical condition?” I murmured to myself more than anyone.

Seth turned his head to reply but he raised his head slightly higher and called out. “JOSH! JOSH! Josh over here!”

“Who is Josh?” I asked.

“Josh is the paramedic who found Alec and Amy. He is also the paramedic who took Grace and I to this room,” Seth explained. I nodded briefly and in my peripheral vision I saw a young man, who I assumed was Josh, plus three security guards.

“Back down guys. I’ve brought in the big guns,” Josh instructed cheerfully.

Once the three body guards obstructed us from the reporters Seth and I followed Josh inside.

When I entered the rooms my eyes instantly found the young boy, I’m presuming is Alec, sitting on a chair next to a bed where a curtain cut off my view.

“Hello Steven,” Grace drawled from beside me. Alec snapped his head in my direction and his illuminating yellow eyes and his transparent white hair enchanted me greatly. I looked at Grace and greeted her quickly but as soon as I greeted her I turned my head towards Alec and noticed he was holding a book.

“He hasn’t spoken to anyone. He refuses to speak,” Josh informed me.

“Never hurts to try,” I muttered. I walked towards Alec and saw that he instantly backed up in his seat. “I won’t hurt you kid,” I said. Alec seemed slightly hesitant and he tightened his grip on the book, which I didn’t notice until then.

When I got to his height I squatted down. “Can I see that book?”

Alec’s eyes widened then he cocked his head to the side. “It’s Amy’s’ diary,” he whispered.

I turned my head to face the astonished looks I got from Seth, Grace and Josh and sent them a smug look. “Can I take a look Alec?”

He shook his head vigorously and his grip on the diary constricted as I reached out to take it from him. “Have you taken a look at it?”

“No. That would be rude.”

I smirked at him. “Well I took a look at Seth’s diary. And it was quite interesting.”

“It wasn’t a diary it was a journal,” Seth corrected from Grace’s bed.

“Believe what you want. So Alec, want to take a peek?”

“No. It is Amy’s not mine. So I’m giving it to her when she wakes up.”

“Your call Alec. But can I ask you something?” Alec nodded his head slowly. “What happened on the train?”

“Alec, sweetie pie, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to,” Grace drawled.

“The police are going to ask me, aren’t they?” Alec inquired softly.

Josh moved beside me and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. “They’re going around asking the survivors of the crash their point of view of what had happened. So yes, they will want your statement.”

“I guess I should tell you then?” Alec asked.

“Sweetie pie,” Grace began and all four heads turned to her, “you can sit here next to me and tell us what happened but only if you want to.” Alec nodded mutely and stood up and headed over to Grace’s bed. Grace shuffled over and tried to make room, but with her protruding belly in the way Alec had a miniscule amount of room.

Once seated Grace put and arm around his shoulders and he took a deep breath in and talked. “Mum and dad got invited to the Country Music Awards and because I was old enough to go they let me come. Amy was ecstatic because she would be with me and not Craig, her boyfriend. I shouldn’t be saying this but Amy doesn’t like Craig anymore. But yeah, I got invited and we had to take the train to the place where the awards were. Dad wanted to sing a song and so we were about to and then a static voice said, Your captain is now dead. We’ve also cut the breaks and now we’re going to speed up the train so it crashes at Kampfer. Hope you enjoy your death.’ Dad stood up and walked out of the room and mum asked where he was going. Dad old her he was going to see if the captain really is dead. He never came back. Mum went next to see what was wrong. Amy was the only one that stayed with me.

Alec sniffed and wiped away the snot from his nose furiously. Josh encouraged him to go on and Alec did. “After mum and dad left I told Amy that we were going to die. Minutes passed and mum and dad didn’t return. Amy and I heard a loud bang and she threw herself on my body and, and – “

“Sweetie. You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” Grace cooed. Alec rubbed away the tears falling freely down his face.

“But I have to,” he sobbed. “Josh said I have to tell the police what happened.”

“Then continue Alec,” Seth instructed cautiously while placing a hand on his shoulder.

Alec nodded slowly but he continued. “Amy threw her body over mine and then we got thrown into the air by a force. Amy’s body hit the roof, then we both fell to the ground.” Alec cradled his left arm that was in a white cast. “And that’s how my arm broke. The train jolted again and we were separated. Amy flew back and hit the other side of the room thing that we were in. I moved in the corner of the room because I was scared. Amy made her way over to me and told me to hide under the seat, so we did. Her body covered mine and then the train jolted again and Amy went flying off my body. Her body bounced off the walls while I held onto the bar underneath the seat. When it stopped I crawled over and cried over her body. Then you came and saved us Josh,” Alec whispered. He jumped off the bed and engulfed Josh into a hug. “I’m scared,” Alec whispered into Josh’s ear.

“It’s going to be ok Alec. Amy is going to wake up soon. I can feel it,” Josh cooed.

Alec pulled back and some more tears fell from his eyes. “What if she doesn’t?”

“She will Alec. From what you’ve told us she sounds like a fighter. She’ll make it.” Everyone looked at me but Grace and Seth looked at me in shock.

“What are you all looking at?” I snarled at everyone, my sudden calm demeanor suddenly vanished. “Seth I came for you. Come on we have to go.”

“Steven, can’t you see that my wife might give birth today?” Seth countered.

“Come on Steven. Just give the band a break. Live a little!” Grace exclaimed.

“No I won’t. We have a gig this weekend and if we don’t practice hard enough we would not win the crowd over,” I protested.

“Is that all you care about?” Grace exclaimed.

I growled lowly at her and in return Seth growled louder at me. “You’re a singer?”

I looked to Alec who had his head cocked to the side. “No. I’m part of a rock band, Burning Desires. I don’t sing, never had and never will,” I lied for the most part.

“Who sings?” Alec asked, his shining yellow eyes gleaming with curiosity.

“I do,” Seth piped up from beside Grace’s bed.

We both snapped our heads to Seth who looked at us bluntly. “Well I do,” he muttered.

“Can you sing a song now?” Alec asked.

Seth smirked and opened his mouth but a sickening scream replaced it. We all looked at Grace, whose face became red and contorted into a face of pain.

“Grace, baby, tell me what’s wrong,” Seth begged. I felt something grip my hip and saw Alec holding onto me. If it were any other kid I would have told him to rack off but because this kids has gone through so much the past few days I just placed an arm around him.

“The baby really wants to come out this time,” she grunted out through gritted teeth.

Josh ran into my line of vision blocking Grace’s red face. “Can we talk to Amy?” Alec whispered from below me.

I looked down at him and then back at Grace. Go see a girl in a coma or watch a woman give birth? I looked down at Alec and he watched me with expecting eyes.

“I don’t want to see this woman give birth so yeah. I’ll come with you,” I responded. Alec let go of my side and grasped my arm eagerly and towed me towards the curtain dividing the two beds.

When we were behind the curtain the young girl on the bed entranced me.

“How old is she?” I asked Alec.

I heard the curtain closing and Grace’s shouts echoing in the room. “Seventeen. Why? How old are you?”

“Eighteen. I was just asking.”

I observed Amy as her short and shallow breathes made her chest rise and fall. I looked at her face and she looked like a porcelain doll. She had heart shaped lips that held a faint pink to them. Her pale, translucent skin a deathly pale in comparison to Alec’s bronzed Latin skin, which he must of, inherited from his father. Amy’s hair fanned out like an angels halo and from the pale intensity of her white hair I would have thoroughly mistaken her hair for an angels halo. A small piece of hair was in front of her face and for some reason, probably out of instinct when I’ve flirted with girls previously, reached out and tucked it gently behind her ear. An ear piercing scream came from behind the curtain two voices shouting: Push! Push! Were the only sounds I heard over the beep beep of Amy’s heart monitor. I heard someone sobbing from behind me and turned to see Alec crying over his sisters’ face. I didn’t know what to do so I turned and headed to Alec and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“What if she doesn’t wake up?” he sobbed over her limp body.

“She will Alec. Don’t worry.”

The screaming stopped and Alec raised his head and looked at me, mirroring my expression of confusion. “It’s a girl!” Seth’s voice happily carried through the curtains.

I grinned at Alec. “Grace gave birth.”

Alec smiled slightly and looked back at his sister then back at me. “Let’s go see this little kid,” I offered. Alec nodded slowly and cautiously, his walls of emotional defence back up. I stood up and went through the curtains and saw Seth proudly holding a small body, wrapped in a blanket in his hands.

“What’s her name?” I asked.

Seth looked at me and grinned like an idiot. “Her name is Lily.”

“Lily Odette Blakewood,” Grace finished out of breath. “Now give me my baby boy!”

Seth handed Lily over to Grace where the pair stared at the baby with such emotion it was sickening to watch. Instead I looked over to where Josh was. He was sitting on a chair where the window was. “You right there?” I inquired.

Josh laughed an airy laugh and just grimaced at me. “I’m never, ever delivering a baby again.”

“I didn’t sign up for this job, you did” I muttered.

“Heard that,” Josh called out. I rolled my eyes at his comment.

A small groan came from the other side of the room and I looked behind me and saw Alec standing over the bed with wide eyes.

I walked over to him and what I saw in front of me astounded my eyes. The most enchanting girl sat before me with her translucent skin glowing slightly and her eyes, golden orbs that could captivate any man. “Amy!” Alec exclaimed.

Amy was lying down on the bed staring at the ceiling and she up but a groan of pain escaped her lips. “Where am I?” she asked.
