"Hoy, nerd! Aray ko, naman!" I glared at the culprit - Zandro. Zandro Alvarez, the basketball star, the heartthrob, and my ultimate nemesis. He'd just "accidentally" bumped into me, sending my carefully stacked pile of physics books tumbling to the floor. "Could he be any more annoying?" I thought to myself.
"Oops, sorry, Cullen," he said, a smirk playing on his lips. "Didn't see you there. You know, because you're always buried in those books. You should come up for air sometimes."
"Well, maybe if you spent less time dribbling and more time studying, you wouldn't need to copy my homework all the time," I retorted, gathering my books. "At least someone's gotta pass Physics, right?"
"Who says I copy your homework? Maybe I just like...borrowing inspiration," he winked. "Besides, ikaw kaya ang nagco-copy sa'kin." He nudged me with his elbow.
This was our daily routine. Me, Gwendolyn Cullen, the physics geek, and Zandro, the jock, locked in a never-ending battle of wits and insults. We were polar opposites, oil and water, the square root of negative one and a positive integer. "We're like, the opposite of each other," I thought.
We were also forced to work together in our Physics class. Our teacher, Ms. Cruz, had this brilliant idea of pairing us up for the entire semester. "Maybe you two can learn something from each other," she'd said, oblivious to the fact that all we learned was new ways to annoy each other. "She thinks we'll become friends? As if."
He leaned closer, his voice a low murmur. "Maybe she knows something we don't, Cullen. Baka naman destiny tayo." He winked again, and I rolled my eyes.
"In your dreams, Alvarez," I said, turning away. But even as I walked away, I couldn't help but feel a strange flutter in my stomach. Ano ba 'tong nararamdaman ko? I wondered. It was probably just indigestion from the cafeteria food. Yeah, that had to be it.
