Well if you attend Sun Hills High School, they probably are, for these are a few phrases from optimist Jacob Perez, SHHS's most popular student that everyone relies on for the best advice. With his charm and charisma, Jacob's antics never fail to impress. However, one girl happens snag Jacob's attention. With her head down in a different book every day, Jacob notices the distance she keeps from the other students. To him, she's unhappy and of course Jacob doesn't let that slip past him. However, what Jacob fails to realize is that, to her, it's absolute paradise being by herself and away from the drama. Can Jacob, just maybe, get a smile out of her? "Why are you so positive all the time?" he asks, looking over into my eyes. I bite my lip and look up. "Because it makes it seem like everything is fine," I say, capturing his eyes with mine, "Everything... is... fine..." ***** Madeline has the glass-half-full outlook on life. She goes through her everyday with a constant smile glowing on her face and she easily ignores the haters. But she isn't completely fine. Inside, she hurts. The comments her parents make about her hurts. Her feeling of disappointment that she believes everyone feels about her hurts. It all hurts. Then an old life-long classmate that she barely talks to rolls around, just tossing a random comment her way, and they strike up a full conversation, a friendship blossoming. Then her feelings develop even more towards the guy with the black-framed glasses.

Understanding her could be harder than he first thought, but it would be worth it as Drina's heart thaws, giving him a glimpse of the girl she had once been, the experiences that had shaped her, and the young woman she is now. Christmas this year would be a blast-- the looking forward to spending it alone, the unexpected reunion of childhood friends, and a short reminder Christmas is not about the gifts, the friends, the celebration, the preparation or the inevitable presence of loneliness-- but about love and sacrifices.
