The warmth of the village had given them temporary comfort, but safety was never meant to last.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the dunes, Raayan sensed something was wrong. The air was too still. The villagers, who usually hummed with conversation, had grown quiet. And then—he saw it.
Tracks in the sand. Soldiers had arrived.
"We need to leave." His voice was sharp, urgent.
Amara frowned, setting down her cup of tea. "What? No. We—"
"Now."
There was no room for argument.
Raayan pulled her away, guiding her through the winding paths, past the huts and toward the cliffs. The moment they reached the outer dunes, arrows sliced through the air—shouts followed, metal clashing against metal.
The battle had begun.
Raayan fought like the warrior he was, swift and precise, each movement calculated. Amara could only watch as he defended her with a kind of fury she had never seen before.
But then—one soldier got too close.
"Amara!"
She gasped as strong hands grabbed her arms, pulling her away from Raayan. Her pulse pounded in her ears. For the first time since fleeing the palace, true fear gripped her.
She fought, kicking, twisting, doing everything in her power to free herself. But she wasn't a trained fighter—not like Raayan.
And yet, the soldier holding her suddenly froze.
A blade pressed against his throat.
Raayan stood behind him, his eyes darker than night, his breathing heavy.
"Let. Her. Go." His voice was not a request—it was a death sentence.
The soldier obeyed immediately, stumbling back as Raayan pulled Amara toward him. His grip on her wrist was tight, his fingers trembling slightly—the only sign that he had been afraid.
They ran, escaping into the cliffs, the chaos fading behind them. When they finally stopped, Amara turned to him, her breath uneven.
"You were scared," she murmured again.
Raayan clenched his jaw. "You think I'd let anything happen to you?"
Something in his voice made her chest tighten. "Why do you care so much?"
Silence.
And then—he stepped closer.
"Because I do."
Amara's breath caught in her throat. She had spent so long trying to break through his walls, never expecting that one day, they would crumble on their own.
The space between them disappeared. His fingers brushed against her cheek, hesitant—like he was touching something forbidden.
She leaned into him.
And for the first time, Raayan did not pull away.
