MIA

The Evergreen Diner was one of the few places in town where people like Lina and Damon would never step foot. Which is why, it's been a very long time since I'd eaten here.

I sit across Noah, fingers fidgeting and stomach rumbling from hunger. I watch him talk to the waitress taking our orders. The moment we had entered the diner, she had her sight for him. I even caught her throwing sour looks towards me a couple of times. I raise my eyebrows and my face contorts in disgust.

She can't stop giggling, even though it's clear all he's doing is trying to get food for us. She tries to touch his shoulder but he scoots further inside the booth. I stifle a laugh when he looks at me desperately.

"Will that be all?"

Her shrill, nasal voice turns high pitched as she giggles yet again. Noah nods and turns his attention towards me. Seeing as she wasn't getting the attention she wanted, she stomps away. I cover my mouth to hide my smile.

"Stop smiling."

And his tone just makes me burst out laughing. Hard.

"Come on. She was cute. If you ignore her shrill, nasal tone."

He shudders in response which just makes me laugh harder.

"I am not interested."

He grumbles and I nod.

"Why? Do you have someone already?"

"Something like that."

His answer should make me smile. And yet, all I feel is a pang of hurt in my chest.

I had decided this morning that I was going to stay away. From him. And yet, just a couple of hours later, here I was, sitting in front of him.

My voice comes out strained when I speak again.

"You must love her a lot."

This makes him smile. A smile capable of melting even the coldest of hearts. And to think that there was a girl, somewhere in this world, who was the reason for that smile.

"I do. I really do."

"Where is she now?"

Our food is delivered, this time, by a different waitress. It's pancakes and coffee. My eyes shine like a little kid.

"She's umm, well, indisposed. At the moment."

I take a bite of the pancakes and they melt in my mouth. I almost moan from the pleasure.

"What do you mean, indisposed?"

"She doesn't know where I am."

I nod, taking another bite.

"Why? Did she leave you? Or you her?"

"No, more like we were separated."

"Why?"

He scoffs and I purse my lips.

"Lets just say our fathers didn't approve of our relationship."

An unexpected laugh escapes my mouth and I quickly cover my mouth, my eyes wide with surprise. I expect him to get upset and lash out but all he does is smile.

There's that smile again.

"Sorry, I--"

"It's okay. I know where it came from."

I nod.

"I mean, it is the 21st century."

He smiles and gives a short nod.

"Yeah but where I come from, it doesn't work like that. She was the only daughter of an Italian mafia boss. A mafia princess."

When I hear him say that, a sharp pain shoots through head, making me cry out. I clutch my head in despair.

"Mia!"

The pain just gets worse and I can feel Noah's hand roaming around my waist. He fishes out the bottle of pills and gives me two. I reach for them but my aim misses and pills go rolling on the ground.

"Dammit!"

My vision starts blurring and tears sting the corner of my eyes. I feel a hand on the back of my neck and a gentle tug backwards. I feel another hand near my lips as the pills slide down my throat. Noah hands me the coffee cup and gulp down half of it. The pills kick in immediately and the pain subsides slightly. My vision clears a bit and I can see a worried expression on Noah's face. I smile slightly.

"I am fine."

"I know you are not."

His voice is a pained whisper as I cup his face and caress his cheek.

"Really, I am."

He sighs and pulls me into his arms. I stiffen at the sudden closeness and look up at him. He has the same look on his face which he had when he was talking about the girl he loved. I try to shift away but he holds me in place.

"Stay."

"I don't think we should--"

"Just stay."

His commanding yet gentle voice roots me to my place. My mind reels back to the first time we met and the heat we experienced.

A couple minutes go by and I relax in his arms. The feeling of his warmth is odd yet comforting. Extremely familiar. I clear my throat before speaking.

"So, what happened to that thing from this morning?"

He looks down at me and smiles.

"Oh that. I took care of it. Leo is finishing it up."

"Is it dangerous?"

He rubs his chin.

"Dangerous, no. But you know our world is not a stranger to death. Especially when it comes to handling our business."

I laugh lightly, every laugh making me wince in pain.

"You know, I should be running for the hills right now."

He mirrors my laugh and looks into my eyes. His laughter dies and he looks at me with an intense look in his eyes.

"Then why aren't you? Why are you still sitting here?"

I look him in the eye and breathe in deep before considering my answer. Millions of thoughts cross my mind, making me question myself if I should tell him the truth.

"I am here because I am incapable of staying away from you."

I expect him to burst out laughing till tears come out, making fun of me.

But all he does is stare at me. The next couple of things happen so fast, I barely get time to register them.

His lips on mine, kissing me, like his life depends on it.

I know I am supposed to pull back. I know I am supposed to push him away.

But instead, my fingers are curled in his hair and I pull him back slightly, just to deepen the kiss. It's a hasty kiss where our tongues are trying to fight for dominance. And yet, all we end up doing is deepening the kiss, holding on to each other for dear life.

It's euphoric and forbidden at the same time.

All I know is I want to keep kissing this man.
