Carly Pov
I laid on the bed with Alfred in a room I had known most of my life.
When I left Sean alone in the woods, I decided to go back to the only place I could. Calling up a cab and heading back to my hometown was extremely hard because I would've rather I had been in Sean's arms instead.
I found my old home deserted when I arrived. My mom must've finally snapped herself back into reality and went to work again.
The house felt eerie without anyone else in here with me. Memories haunted me and Alfred was only a small source of comfort. It was sad because I could tell how he didn't even want to be here.
I hadn't been to my school in a while and I wasn't sure if I could go back to that place. I had already cried into my pillow for hours, but I wasn't yet ready to face the world again.
"It's just you and me now." I told Alfred.
He whimpered in response and curled up further in my embrace.
How could I have ended up back here? All alone nonetheless. I had finally had a hope for my future when I was with Sean, and now I was back to square one with only a dog to care for me.
I was snapped out of my depressive thoughts when the doorbell rang.
There were only a few people I knew who would actually want to see me and all of them aren't in this area.
A small part of me hoped that Sean had come here to ask if we could work things out. I didn't see how we could when we lived in completely opposite worlds, but a girl still in love could hope.
I tried to straighten my appearance knowing that I looked like a wreck. My hair was matted from lying down and not only were my eyes puffy from crying, but my whole face was still slightly flushed.
I took the stairs slowly one at a time and Alfred followed me like a true friend. At this moment I wasn't certain that I wanted to see whatever was on the other side of that door. If it were anyone but Sean I would be disappointed. However, if it was Sean then my heart might just break all over again once I relive the fact that we can't be together.
It was when I reached the bottom of the steps that doorbell rang again. Whoever was on the other side wasn't a very patient person.
Sure enough, Sean was standing in front of me when I swung the door open. He let out a wide grin at the door being opened but it faltered when he noticed my rough appearance.
He looked good, way better than he had only hours ago. He wasn't the hurt boy left in the woods, but the Sean who made me feel as if everything would be alright.
Had he gotten over me so quickly? No, I reminded myself. He wouldn't be here if he had.
"What's up?" I had tried to sound like everything was normal between us but my voice crack in the middle and I couldn't hold in the tears that fell. I had thought that I couldn't cry anymore, but seeing him opened the dam that held in the waterworks of my eyes.
He didn't hesitate to grab me and pull me into his arms. He ran his hand up and down my back and soothed me as he always did. It was in his embrace that I finally felt at home.
"Hey, baby. It's ok."
"No, it's not. I'm in love with you, Sean. But it can't work between us."
"It can though."
"No." I stepped back from him and wiped my nose on my sleeve. This was my effort to seem strong. In reality, I could barely stand on my own.
"Why not?"
"You want me to be this strong woman at your side while you protect your kind. I can't be that. Truthfully, I would only end up getting in your way. I wish it could be just you and me but you have responsibilities."
"Not anymore."
"What?"
"My dad found someone else to fill the position when he steps down." That he would allow someone else to take his birthright for me was appalling.
"Who?"
"My uncle is an alpha. He has two sons. The younger one can become the alpha of my pack. He has alpha blood and he's family so he's a perfect candidate."
"And your dad is ok with that?" I couldn't believe this was something he'd approve of.
"It was his idea actually. He knows how important it is for me to be with you, my mate."
"How could you give up being an alpha? That's your world."
"No, you're my world. I can't change what I am but if giving up some lousy title will get you back then I'll do it." My heart fluttered in my chest at his words.
"You'd really leave all that just to be with me?"
"Yes, but there is actually one condition if I'm to live with humans with you."
"Yes?" I was afraid to even ask, for his condition might be something I'm unable to do.
My palms began to shake as I watched him drop onto one knee and pull out a gorgeous diamond ring.
"You have to marry me."
My hands instantly covered my mouth. I couldn't believe he's really proposing to me.
"How will this work?"
He furrowed his brows because my first word should've been yes.
"We'll finish school, get mundane jobs, and start a family. Just like everybody else."
That was all I had really ever wanted, and if he wanted those things too, then that's what we needed to do.
"Then yes. Of course I'll marry you."
I was in his arms once again before I knew it and everything felt right in, not his world and not mine, but our world.
