The sixteenth entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is on the compilation film, "Mobile Suit Gundam (1981)". Here, I look back on my experience with this anime series, the sub-genre of military science-fiction, and how this film's construction begins the thematic groundwork for what makes "Gundam" tick.

A Trap By Tradition Souls In A Golden Cage takes place in the year 1981, aristocratic Boston, Massachusetts, America centering the lives of the protagonists: Esmeralda Blanchard ( Esme ), 16 years old and her double first cousin once removed, Jude Richard Adams ( Jude ), a 33 year old litigator, who are forced in an arranged marriage by their families. Esme, despite initial disagreements and barely recovering from brain cancer, looks forward to her marriage, knowing that Jude was a nice man, but he's still stuck with the thought of his ex girlfriend, Rebecca Giulia, who tries to overshadow Esme in every way possible from pointing out her lack of feminity and weak and fragile appearance. Also, other family members pity for Jude, while his mother, Desiree Blanchard, remains aloof of anything pitying Jude. Esme despised this, because she really hoped for a newer and a differently perfect life with Jude after years of emotional abuse from her own family. But it seems like there's been more mental burden ever since. She completely lost hope in the fact that her marriage was going to be any better. The thought that for Rebecca, even if not dating, Jude still had feelings and hung out with her, shatters Esme, and her relationship with Jude starts to get distant over time. Yet, the marriage has to go on. After a few more weeks, Jude feels sorry for his partial infidelity and wishes to work things out by arranging a romantic candlelight dinner for him and Esme in their own bedroom. Esme is impressed when he surprises her, but what was supposed to be a romantic dinner turned into a drunken reckless infatuation, ultimately leading to parenthood, which initially wasn't their plan till a few more years, despite a great want for it in both of their cases. Esme is at complete crossroads, having to make a hard decision, choosing between her education and motherhood. My third short story for the National Geographic #PlanetOrPlastic writing contest takes place in Michigan in the early 1980s, where a teenage boy is devastated by the death of his younger brother at the hands of polyurethane, a type of plastic commonly used for insulation at the time. What seems like a totally normal Valentine's Day turns into one he'll never forget, and never take for granted, especially when it comes to protecting those at home, in the sea, and the entire world.

Nora Archer is the apprentice of a dress maker in London, 1981. Strange happenings occur when Mrs. Bridedale takes a trip to Paris with her husband to learn new dress making styles. Nora is left in charge of the shop, seeing has she has nearly finished her apprenticeship. Red and white candles have been left around in the shop in various patterns, and a week after Mrs. Bridedale leaves, she finds the body of an unborn baby in the middle of a pentagram. Victor Maxwell breaks into the shop chasing after a demon and literally crashes into Nora. How will Nora pay back her debt of letting a very powerful demon escape? Maybe with her life.
