Space and time began about 13.7 billion years ago but it consisted almost exclusively of hydrogen until some stars grew sufficiently massive to create the heavier elements in gigantic explosions called supernovae. The Sun formed about 4.6 billion years ago with an orbiting disk of debris that became the Solar System and, about 4.4 billion years ago, the Earth was cool enough for liquid water. Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus make up 99% of the mass of the human body. These elements combine to form molecules ranging from water to the twin helices of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that specify the genetic code. Life on Earth probably began with complex, virus-like molecules that over billions of years evolved cells and the ability to split carbon dioxide and water (H2O). The poisonous waste product, oxygen, released into the atmosphere, probably caused the first mass extinctions on Earth. WHO THE HELL ARE WE? is a series of short books and videos describing the evolution of civilization. Almost everyone on the planet is five times wealthier than their ancestors only 50 years ago. This astonishing phenomenon has also improved the health, education, and longevity of almost everyone. The cause; an explosive growth in ideas and productivity. Civilization began when we discovered how to use fire and stumbled onto the way to create infinite wealth; free trade. The discovery of agriculture and trade made us richer but we also discovered how to destroy wealth. Great civilization grew up but then disappeared leaving only incredible ruins and ideas. Later books detail some of the ideas and developments that increased the average life span from about 40 years to more than 80 and the average world income from less than $3 to more than $33 per person per day (and to $140 per day in some countries).

This is not a classic science fiction novel. It's not about a distant world in space and time, but rather about an alternative reality here and now on planet earth. It's a lot about science, but the fiction part comes as a thought experiment. What if neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden won the 2020 election, but instead a candidate who seemingly came out of nowhere, neither Republican nor Democrat, but independent? Concerned about society and politics as I was, I started this experiment in 2020 trying to imagine another pattern of reality. Now I would like to invite you to a journey to a parallel universe where different solutions are found, different outcomes are possible. The general suite of events is quite the same, because the probability is low for one individual coming in just in January 2021 to make any difference at this level. So we have the pandemic, 6th of January 2021, leaving Afghanistan, the war in Ukraine etc. But from the very beginning, there is something new sneaking in. Will you be my fellow travelers to a parallel reality? Explore and discuss tiny things that might make remarkable differences? Please come and enjoy. Disclaimer: The stories, I tell, touch many different disciplines of thought and science. As you might imagine, I'm not an expert in all these questions, but I asked experts, listened to their answers and available lectures, read available papers and books and collected concepts and experiences from all over the globe to design a possible future that might be much more humane and attractive than what we have now. My question is: How to take the given, respect freedom, democracy, respect human rights, honour the needs and desires of people and create something new? Please be my companions on this journey. Discuss your thoughts and share your experiences. I might not be able to answer quickly every time, as I'm not always online, but will do my best.

Astronaut Major Trenton Mathias was given a solitary mission to Mars in 2054. For two years he singlkehandedly planted viable microbes found in Earth's icecaps into the Red Planet's barren soil. It was a special project by NASA-Expan to jumpstart life into a lifeless world. In reporting back home his latest transmision he explains tragically why it will be his last. It was never intended to be a one way mission . . .
