The town of Dogwood in Cross County, North Carolina is a picturesque seaside community with a sordid past swimming in piracy. Smoking Beard, aka Edward Hollingsworth, was the terror of the colonial coast in the 1600's, and one of Dogwood's founding members, before his descent into illegal privateering and eventual decline into madness. Four hundred years later, Bertha Rodriguez, romance novelist, resides in Dogwood along with her best friend Camilla Goldstein, Dogwood's chief of police. Every year the town capitalizes on its founders' past with a week long festival in June. The Founders' Festival brings much needed tourism and a break from the monotony of living in a small town. This year will be different, a huge storm hits the coast two weeks before the festival begins and someone uses it as an opportunity for murder. With their town cut off from the rest of civilization, it falls to Bertha and Camilla to solve the murder before the weather clears and the villain is able to make an escape. In a world where timing is uncertain and outcomes are never guaranteed, Beyond Us: Preparing for an Unpredictable Future explores the quiet forces that shape human progress-effort, failure, hope, support, purpose, and fulfilment. This philosophical journey challenges the idea that success is only about winning big. Instead, it reveals how growth, small victories, and resilience prepare us for moments we cannot control. Through reflection and deep insight, this book invites readers to rethink failure, embrace uncertainty, and discover meaning beyond outcomes. Because sometimes, the greatest success is becoming stronger than the future you feared.

What if success is not about luck, but about timing? And what if timing is something no human truly controls? In a world driven by deadlines, competition, and comparison, many people believe that effort alone guarantees results. They plan carefully, work tirelessly, and measure themselves against others-only to face delays, unexpected failures, and outcomes that arrive later than expected. This book challenges the belief that life unfolds according to human schedules. Through deep philosophical reflection, The Philosophy of Timing explores the hidden relationship between effort, uncertainty, persistence, and alignment. It examines why some goals take years to unfold, why repeated failure often hides meaningful growth, and why success rarely arrives exactly when expected. Rather than presenting quick solutions, this book invites readers to rethink how they understand progress itself.

Cohen and Catherine's paths will cross again after five years, which will further complicate their situation.

Satchel Annalise Lanzandares flew once - and she flew far. At twenty-two, she left her lola, her compound, and everything familiar to pursue a bioengineering degree in Chongqing, China. A city that would teach her more about herself than any laboratory ever could. She built a life there, brick by brick. She found her people, her rhythm, her name. She fell in love with a city that committed fully to every season. And somewhere in the fog and the ginkgo trees and the late nights in the library, she met someone who saw her clearly - perhaps too clearly, and perhaps at the wrong time. Then life happened. The way it always does - without asking permission. Now thirty-five, Anna is back in the compound she once couldn't wait to leave. Her ambitions have been folded quietly into freelance work and early bedtimes and a bob cut that requires no maintenance. She tells herself she came back out of love. But the truth, the one she cannot outrun, is not entirely sure that there is a difference anymore.

Part of the "Break of Dawn" series, a collection of confessional poetry, verses and prose with universal themes of self-identity, family, love and loss. The collection is narrated with an underlying sense of longing, the need to overcome adversity and heal old wounds to transcend into a brighter future. BREAK OF DAWN picks up my writing after a more than 15 year hiatus, having survived a period in my life deeply rooted in depression and a general sense of emptiness. With a main focus on personal introspection and the realization that writing and poetry had always been part of who I am, and the best outlet for bottled-up emotions.

This is Number 96 speaking...or writing...whatever. Some of you may know me as Black Mist...or Dark Mist if you don't watch the Japanese version. If that's the case, I suggest you call me Black Mist from now on. This is about my experience with a creation I wanted to make. She was a failure. BUT not as much as I thought. You see, even though she was stupid and acted cute all the time, she was still smart enough to save my life...
