C S Baughman grew up in Henderson, Texas, in the heart of deep East Texas, and earned a degree in criminal justice from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. During his college years, he traveled the back roads and small towns of East Texas delivering furniture and appliances for a local business - developing an affection for the area's people, landscapes, and unhurried way of life that never left him.
After graduating, Baughman was hired by the Texas Department of Public Safety and attended the DPS trooper academy in Austin, where, upon completion, he was assigned to work as a highway patrol trooper in Rockwall County. After nearly six years, he transitioned to Commercial Vehicle Enforcement in 2006, where he worked until his retirement in March 2026.
The procedural authenticity woven throughout Reklaw reflects two decades of experience conducting inspections, reading drivers, and working alone on various highways throughout the state.
Though his career predominantly kept him in the Dallas area rather than the East Texas he grew up loving, writing Reklaw became a way back. Baughman's favorite television series is Ozark, and when writing, he wants his readers to experience his stories the way a viewer gets pulled into a compelling Netflix production - character-driven, cinematic, and layered with enough moral complexity to keep you thinking long after the episode ends.
When he isn't writing, Baughman loves spending time with family and playing piano. He also enjoys tending to the many trees he has planted in his yard and decorating them with an unreasonable amount of Christmas lights during the holidays.
