"As the women are beckoned to take their places beside their husbands, a flutter of anxiety settles in my chest.
I look to Tracer, the tallest of the bunch, his arm outstretched to me from where he stands at the front of the tent.
I've only known this guy for a short time, and I just learned that he’s the revered chief of this community. The girls didn’t go into detail, but I gathered that he’s an absolute beast who is unmatched in strength. He’s defended the tribe for years, and he’s never lost a battle.
The idea of sitting in his lap in such an intimate setting sends a wave of nervousness through me.
With a deep breath, I make my way to his side, trying to hold my head high despite the butterflies in my stomach.
I can do this. I’m brave. I’ve made it this far.
He looks at me, his expression an intrigue of sternness, his dark purple eyes holding something softer, something that hints at a vulnerability beneath the surface.
He gestures to a low platform covered with pillows and blankets, clearly intended for someone important since everyone else is sitting on the floor.
If I didn’t know that he was the person in charge here, this definitely would’ve been a dead giveaway.
Tracer grabs my hand, pulling me down as he sits cross-legged on the dais, and I hesitantly lower myself into his lap, my body fitting awkwardly against his.
He pulls me down all the way, my back hitting his chest. I can feel his muscles tense beneath me, his fingers brushing against my skin as if involuntarily seeking contact."
