The storm had passed, leaving the landscape coated in a glistening blanket of untouched snow. Inside the neighboring cabin, Maggie and Lila sat by the crackling fire, their conversation light and filled with laughter as they folded freshly washed linens. Outside, the world seemed calm, the silence of winter offering a brief respite from the ongoing tensions swirling around Alex, Sophie, and Rebecca.

The door flew open suddenly, letting in a gust of cold air. Both women jumped, startled by the unannounced intrusion. Rebecca stood in the doorway, her expression sharp and unyielding, her green eyes glittering with determination.

“Rebecca?” Maggie said, rising from her seat. “What are you doing here?”

Rebecca stepped inside, brushing off the snow clinging to her coat. Her movements were deliberate, her demeanor exuding defiance. “We need to talk,” she announced curtly, shutting the door behind her with a sharp thud.

Lila raised an eyebrow, leaning casually against the back of a chair. “About what?” she asked, though the tone in Rebecca’s voice already gave her a sinking feeling.

Rebecca’s gaze flicked between them. “About Alex,” she said bluntly, her voice cutting through the warmth of the room like ice.

Maggie and Lila exchanged a glance, their unease growing. Maggie folded her arms and met Rebecca’s piercing stare. “I don’t think there’s anything to talk about, Rebecca. Alex is with Sophie now. End of story.”

Rebecca scoffed, her laugh low and bitter. “You really think it’s that simple? You think Sophie can just waltz in and erase everything Alex and I had together?”

Lila straightened, her eyes narrowing. “You’re clinging to the past, Rebecca. Whatever you had with Alex is over. He’s happy now. You need to let it go.”

Rebecca’s smirk was sharp, her voice laced with sarcasm. “Let it go? That’s easy for you to say. You’ve never had someone you love ripped away from you, have you?”

“Don’t make this about us,” Maggie said firmly, her voice calm but resolute. “This is about you. And you’re being selfish, Rebecca. If you truly cared about Alex, you’d want him to be happy—even if that happiness doesn’t include you.”

Rebecca’s expression darkened, her mask of composure beginning to crack. “You think you know how I feel? You don’t! Alex and I have a connection Sophie will never understand. He’s not over me, no matter what he says.”

Lila took a step forward, her voice rising with frustration. “This isn’t about what you think Alex feels. It’s about what he’s told you—and he’s told you to move on. Why can’t you respect that?”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Because I’m not a coward like the rest of you. I don’t give up on something worth fighting for.”

Maggie let out a slow breath, her patience wearing thin. “Rebecca, the only thing you’re fighting for is your pride. Alex has chosen Sophie. Accept it, or you’re just going to hurt everyone involved, including yourself.”

Rebecca stared at them, her chest heaving with anger. “I don’t care what either of you thinks,” she spat. “Alex is mine, and I’m not walking away. Not this time.”

Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

The room fell into silence, the only sound the crackling fire. Maggie rubbed her temples, letting out a weary sigh. “That went well,” she muttered.

Lila shook her head, her voice laced with disbelief. “She’s completely lost it. We need to warn Sophie. Rebecca isn’t backing down anytime soon.”

Maggie nodded grimly, her mind already racing. “This is going to get messy.”
