The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a pale golden glow over the snowy landscape. Alex stood at the edge of the cabin’s porch, his breath visible in the frigid air. His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he prepared himself for what he had to do. The confrontation with Rebecca was inevitable, and he couldn’t allow her interference to linger any longer.

“I’ll be back soon,” Alex said, glancing over his shoulder at Sophie, who stood in the doorway. Her worry was etched into her features, but she gave him a small nod of understanding.

“Be careful,” she said softly.

“I will,” he promised, stepping into the snow and heading toward Rebecca’s cabin.

The walk felt longer than it was, his thoughts heavy with the weight of the conversation ahead. By the time he reached Rebecca’s cabin, the sun had disappeared, and the first stars were starting to appear in the twilight sky.

He knocked firmly on the door. A moment later, Rebecca opened it, her expression shifting from surprise to something unreadable.

“Alex,” she said, her voice guarded. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“We need to talk,” Alex said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation.

Rebecca closed the door behind him, crossing her arms as she leaned against the wall. “What is it this time? Did Sophie send you to make me back off?”

“This has nothing to do with Sophie,” Alex replied, his tone firm. “This is about us—about you refusing to let go of something that ended a long time ago.”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed, and her lips curled into a bitter smile. “So that’s it? You’re here to lecture me about moving on? Do you have any idea how much I’ve sacrificed for you, Alex? And now you expect me to just disappear like none of it ever mattered?”

Alex’s jaw tightened. “I’m not here to dismiss our past, Rebecca. What we had was real, and I’ll always respect that. But it’s over. You need to accept that.”

“Respect?” she scoffed, her voice rising. “If you respected me, you wouldn’t have thrown everything away for someone like Sophie. She doesn’t understand you the way I do. She’ll never love you the way I did.”

Alex took a deep breath, his frustration bubbling just beneath the surface. “This isn’t about comparison. This isn’t about who loves me more or who knows me better. It’s about what’s right for me. And what’s right for me is Sophie. I love her, Rebecca. Nothing you say or do is going to change that.”

Rebecca’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, and for a moment, her anger seemed to falter. “You say you love her, but what happens when things get hard? When she doesn’t understand you the way I did? Will she fight for you like I have?”

“She already has,” Alex said simply, his voice soft but unwavering. “Sophie is everything I’ve ever wanted—and more. I’m sorry if that hurts you, but it’s the truth.”

Silence filled the room, the weight of Alex’s words settling over them like a heavy blanket. Rebecca looked away, her shoulders slumping as if the fight had drained out of her.

“You really mean it, don’t you?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“I do,” Alex said. “I need you to let me go, Rebecca. For your sake and mine. Holding on to something that’s gone will only hurt you more.”

Rebecca nodded slowly, though her expression was still a mix of heartbreak and defiance. “I don’t know if I can forgive you for this, Alex. But I’ll try to move on. For me.”

“That’s all I can ask,” Alex said.

He turned to leave, pausing at the door to look back at her. “I hope you find happiness, Rebecca. Truly.”

Without waiting for a response, he stepped out into the cold night, letting the door close behind him.

Back at the cabin, Sophie sat by the fire, her hands twisting nervously in her lap. Maggie and Lila sat nearby, their presence a silent reassurance.

The sound of the door opening made Sophie’s head snap up, and relief flooded her when she saw Alex step inside. His expression was weary, but his eyes softened when they met hers.

“It’s done,” he said, his voice quiet but certain.

Sophie rose and crossed the room, wrapping her arms around him. “Are you okay?”

“I am now,” Alex said, holding her close.

Maggie and Lila exchanged a glance, both of them smiling faintly. The storm Rebecca had brought into their lives might not be over, but for now, the worst seemed to have passed.

As the fire crackled in the hearth, Sophie and Alex stood together, their bond stronger than ever.
