October the 8th, 1894

The evening presses upon me with a weight most insidious, as though the very air conspires to draw me into its embrace.

My limbs, though obedient in their outward motion, are laden with a languor I scarcely recognize. Each step, each gesture, requires a deliberation that the mind finds difficult to summon.

My eyes, though open, betray me in quiet rebellion. They tremble at the lids' edge, fluttering against the will that commands wakefulness.

I am seized by the peculiar terror of almost succumbing — the sensation that consciousness might slip entirely from my grasp before I am prepared to yield it.

Even as I attempt to write, my hand falters. Words elongate, stretching thin upon the page, and yet my mind struggles vainly to maintain coherence. The candlelight dances, or perhaps it is only my wavering focus, rendering its shadow uncertain.

I am alone with this heaviness, yet it is intimate, almost companionable in its insistence.

It reminds me that the body, no matter the resolutions of the spirit, may demand repose, and that the mind, too, is bound by mortal limitation.

And so I shall surrender, though reluctantly.

I will allow the eyelids their victory, the muscles their respite, and I shall drift — neither quickly nor gracefully — into the soft tyranny of sleep, hoping that in slumber, the weight may lift, and the mind awaken renewed.

For now, I am prisoner to drowsiness, captive to the irresistible pull of rest, and it is a surrender both inevitable and oddly comforting.
