In Friends in Need, seven Words created the universe, but misused The Words can destroy everything. Each Word lets its Speaker rewrite a physical law in the area near them - for four hours. During that time, guardian monks from China quest to locate and kill the Speaker whose ignorance might unmake the earth. Eric's attractive boss in Portland, Violet Waxman, must help her father sell the bookstore to pay back crime czar, Logan Castro. Worse yet, Eric's buddy, Walt, has been taken hostage by Logan's men. Previously, Eric Rock, a bookstore clerk in Portland, Oregon, learned the power word AmJukJa from his grandmother and it erased gravity around him, but, in San Francisco, he barely escapes an assassin monk while a friendly one teaches him a second power word, KadavRa, erasing weightlessness and then doubling his density with each repetition until bullets cannot hurt him.

Previously, Eric Rock and his friends took refuge in the Cave of the Well, his dad's workshop under Gran's house. They find wing fans they can use to escape and Eric and Violet go to Dr. Clark for help, but Fung, one of the Monks hunting Eric, discovers his friends. They realize Eric and Violet must be going after Endgame themselves, and all of them decide to help.
