In Circle of the Speaker, seven Seven Words created the universe, but misused The Words can destroy everything. Each Word lets its Speaker rewrite a physical law in the area near them - for four hours. During that time, guardian monks from China quest to locate and kill the Speaker whose ignorance might unmake the earth. Previously, Eric Rock and his friends took refuge in the Cave of the Well, his dad's workshop under Gran's house. They find wing fans they can use to escape and Eric and Violet go to Dr. Clark for help, but Fung, one of the Monks hunting Eric, discovers his friends. They realize Eric and Violet must be going after Endgame themselves, and all of them decide to help.
