One year after the events of Death Note, a 17-year-old soon-to-be 18-year-old Gothic girl and wannabe witch named Anna Marie Monroe moves to Japan with her acquaintance, Christy Grim who dreams of starting a singing career. Marie tries to get used to the different lifestyle in Japan compared to how different it was in America since she has no desire to return until she graduates from her senior year of high school so she can be able to get over her breakup with a fellow classmate named John Michaels. Everything seems to be going normal until Marie finds a Death Note which contains the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside of it. Marie is hesitant at first but then starts killing the world's most dangerous criminals and meets someone she only thought she'd meet in her wildest dreams.

As the Boogeyman's wrath grows, Marie grows eager to save everyone from the Boogeyman and to win the game.

From 1999 to 2005, Light reigned over the world as a "God" and a mass murderer known to the world as Kira. Meanwhile, more than halfway across the world, Marie tries to live her life as any other person would, as she deals with loss, fake friends, lies, and the effect that Kira has placed on the world. In 1999, not only does Light find the Death Note and decides to use it to rid the world of evil, but Marie tries to get by as propaganda rises with the Y2K scare. The propaganda dies down when Kira rises and Marie is convinced her prayers have been answered. However, she doesn't know the monster that Kira will become.
