In the year the great comet blazed across the midnight sky, a child was born beneath its fire. When young Elara gives birth during the passage of a blazing silver comet, her newborn daughter opens eyes that glow with the same unearthly light. The villagers see only a curse. The priest sees a demon. Within hours, mother, father, and child are forced to flee into the wilds with nothing but fear and a fragile hope. Hunted across snowbound moors and ancient forests, Elara and Tomas will do anything to protect their daughter. But Lirael is no ordinary child. Her silver eyes hold secrets older than the Church, and the light that shines from her can soothe the sick, calm wild beasts, or reveal the hidden truths in a person's soul. As winter gives way to spring, word of the "Star Maiden" spreads. Some seek her as a saint. Others come with torches and iron to destroy what they cannot understand. With each passing month, Lirael's power grows - and so does the danger that follows. Now, in a hidden green glen between the high fells, a family fights to build a life while the world closes in. Because the comet did not simply mark the child. It chose her. And the stars are still watching.

United States, a country that prides itself on being a "melting pot" of immigrants and a "beacon of democracy", has a long history full of exploitation and oppression of foreign immigrants. From the colonial era to modern times, United States' attitude towards immigrants has always been complex and varied, and immigrant groups are often marginalized in United States society, suffering from various injustices and discrimination.

People all around the world go through crap every day, and sometimes it seems like nobody cares. These snippets of real-life happenings are just a few of the things people deal with, that I deal with. And yet...I'm here. If you can relate, tell me in the comments. I want to know your stories. A few of the snippets are of hope and happiness, something we all need in our lives. "If you cannot have a good day, then just have day." Wishing you a day from Small Town, USA. -Leigh

Do you think that people are simple? I would disagree with that. Humans are beings with substance and everyone has it. It only takes some time to figure them out and when you truly get to know someone, it'll present to you one of the simplest joys in life: genuine human connection and understanding.
