In the rain-slicked, neon-shadowed alleys of Manila, magic is not a gift-it is a live-streamed cage.
The Hegemony controls the grid, licensing relic attunements to the highest bidders while the poor scrape the undercurrent for scraps of forgotten history. But these ancient relics carry a brutal cost: The Toll. Every time Kael activates his father's jagged obsidian shard, he pays with pieces of his own past. A childhood voice. His mother's face. The sound of his father's laugh.
Now, with a raw attunement rate of 26% and his brain bleeding from cognitive shock, Kael is running out of memories to burn.
Saved from deletion by Mika-a rogue "Baseline Breaker" who uses a weathered brass key to freeze local physics-Kael is dragged into a high-stakes conspiracy. Hidden beneath the Walled City of Intramuros, they breach the ancient stone ramparts, only to find a terrifying truth: Manila's historical landmarks are built on top of massive corporate hardware harvesting the city's attunement.
With the Hegemony's elite relic hunters closing the circle, Kael and Mika overload the grid, triggering a spatial tear that launches them north. Ahead of them lies the MacArthur Highway-a continuous, dangerous overland road trip running through Bulacan, Tarlac, and the rugged Sierra Madre passes, completely bypassing the corporate expressways.
To find his missing father and survive the journey, Kael must hunt down his father's lost relics, dodge bullets by tracking where the spectators are looking, and decide how much of his own real past he is willing to erase to hold onto the power he needs to survive.
