The black SUV pulled up smooth as ever, and I already knew who it was before the door even opened. Jay stepped out, fresh cut, shades on, a small smile pulling at his face... but it didn't quite reach his eyes.
Blue beat him out of the car, running straight past me toward the house.
"YN!" she called over her shoulder, mid-run.
"Hey, Blue!" I laughed, waving as she sprinted inside, her curls bouncing. I could already hear Beyoncé's voice inside, warm and full of joy. That sound always did something to me.
Jay shut the car door slowly and turned to face me.
"Got a minute?" he asked, voice low and casual, but I could feel the tension humming underneath.
I crossed my arms, giving a small nod. "What's up?"
He took off his shades, slipping them into his pocket. "You know about the trip?"
"Yeah," I said. "She told me."
Jay gave a small nod like he was checking something off in his head. "It's a family thing. Just us. Her folks, mine, Blue. That kind of vibe."
"Mmhmm." I kept my face neutral. "I figured."
He tilted his head. "Then you probably understand... we won't be needing any extras this time around."
Extras.
I smiled, tight and slow. "Good to know."
He kept going like he didn't hear the edge in my voice. "She won't need a bodyguard on this trip. I got her."
That's when I really looked at him. Looked through him.
"You got her?" I echoed, pretending to think it over. "That's funny... I don't remember her saying she was yours to have."
He smirked, but it faltered just slightly.
"You know," he said, "if there's... something I should be aware of, now's the time."
I raised a brow. "Something?"
He tilted his head a little, tone just shy of condescending. "You and B' been spending a lot of time together. That's all I'm saying."
I gave a soft laugh, cold and quiet. "Well, that's what a bodyguard does right?"
"Right," he said, smiling, but the suspicion still lingered in his eyes. "Just looked like more than that, is all."
I took a step closer, not blinking. "And if it was?"
That wiped the smile clean off his face.
He didn't answer right away. Just slipped his hands deeper in his pockets, then said, "It'd just be a shame to get too comfortable in a house that don't belong to you."
My jaw clenched, but I kept my cool.
"Funny," I said, calm as ever. "Because from where I'm standing, it feels like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."
Jay stared at me like he wanted to say more, but he backed off with a sharp nod.
"Take care," he muttered, turning to leave.
"You too," I said, not looking away until he was out of sight.
The door clicked shut behind him, and I finally exhaled.
He knew something. Or at least suspected it.
But he wasn't ready for the truth.
And he sure as hell wasn't ready to hear that she chose me.
