sofia sat curled into the corner of the sofa, knees tucked up under her, while missy lounged dramatically across the armchair like she owned the place. spider was sprawled on the floor, back against the couch, shoes kicked off, and dusty sat cross-legged beside him, absently fiddling with the loose thread on a cushion. they talked about anything. spider recounted some ridiculous story about getting yelled at by a cashier. dusty kept interrupting to correct details that didn't matter. missy laughed loudly, adding the occasional comment. sofia mostly listened, smiling, chiming in when she could, feeling herself settle the longer they stayed.

then the doorbell rang. sofia's heart jumped before she could stop it, but when she stood, it was steadier this time. "i'll get it." she said, already moving toward the door.

she opened it and felt her chest lift instantly.

malakai stood there first, hands shoved into his pockets, eyes soft with concern. quinni was beside him, holding a small paper bag like it contained something important. darren and ant hovered behind them, already smiling wide.

"hey." darren said gently.

sofia didn't hesitate. she stepped forward and hugged them, one after the other, arms tight around shoulders and backs. quinni squeezed her carefully, murmuring that it was really good to see her. malakai held on just a second longer than the others, resting his chin lightly on her head.

"come in," sofia said, voice warm. "please."

they filtered inside to greetings and overlapping hellos, spider immediately making a stupid joke that didn't land. after a few minutes, someone suggested going outside, too many people, too much energy for one room.

they carried drinks and snacks out into the garden and settled around the table, chairs scraping against stone. the afternoon sun sat low but warm, the pool shimmering beside them. conversation drifted easily, laughter spilling out between sips of water and fizzy drinks. sofia leaned back in her chair, surrounded, breathing easier than she had all day. her phone buzzed again, but this time she wasn't left shook after reading the notification. she grinned. "sasha's coming."

"of course she is," missy said fondly. "late as usual."

by the time sasha arrived, it was around four. the heat had settled properly, the kind that clung to skin. sasha burst through the house like a force of nature, immediately hugging sofia and then launching into a dramatic rant about traffic. then, she complimented sofia's pool.

"wait," spider said slowly. "why are we not in there?"

there was a collective pause. then agreement. they all laughed, energy lifting all at once. sofia stood. "okay, but you'll need swimmers."
