I tapped my foot on the cold marble floor. The anxiety is rising inside my chest with each ticking sound from the clock. My anklets are cutting through the thick silence in the room. I grip the end of my saree pallu. Folding and unfolding it around my finger.
It's already dark and he is not home. His phone is switched off. Why, when we have an emergency, does the phone say the number you have dialled is currently switched, please try again later? The sound of the foot echoed, making me turn at the source.
As the door flew open. With the familiar figure. My shoulder muscles relax. Even though it's dark and I have turned off the lights, I can feel that it's him- my husband.
"Why didn't you sleep?" He asked, and I tightened my lips, making them into a thin line. I stood and made my way towards him. But before I could reach him he took four steps backwards and threw something at me. I flinched at the sudden thing hitting my chest lightly.
I adjusted my glasses and narrowed my eyes only to realise they are roses. Red roses. But- "Is she how you give flowers to your wife for the first time?" I ask, clutching the flowers on my chest. As the fragrance of them reaches my nostrils.
"Put those flowers on the table, I will give you properly, but first let me take a shower", he says, passing beside me. "Switched on the lights", I say to him, but he didn't.
"I love the darkness in the room", he says, taking off his wrist watch. I took steps towards him. As he heard the sound of my anklets. He took two steps backwards. Is something wrong, or did he hit his head on the wall?
"Why are you running away from me?" I ask at the agency. My eyes widened as he didn't come towards me; instead, he took steps backwards until his back hit the door of the walk-in closet.
"I am not running darling. I am just not smelling good. First, let me take a shower!" He shouted from inside the closet. The word darling affects something in me that for a second, nothing runs inside my brain, just that word. And his voice is calling me. Then something clicked.
"Laksh!" I called him, my eyes welled up with tears. My voice held the panic as he rushed from inside the bathroom. His eyes widened as he checked me from head to toe, but the question is. Can he see me in the dark room?
"What happened?" He asked holding my shoulders. Checking for injury in my whole body. "It's an emergency" I said without lifting my feet from the floor.
"Oh shit! Go Fast", he said, pushing me towards the bathroom. I made a face and rolled my eyes. And jerk his hand from my shoulders. "No! It's not that type of emergency, I am bleeding," I say, my toes curled with the pain in my lower body.
"You mean periods?" He asked and I nodded countless times. For a brief time, I had forgotten that I was waiting for him because I wanted the pads. Which I had not. "Bring me something", I say, and he narrowed his eyes. His face shines under the moonlight but I can see something red on his cheek. I raised my head to cup his face, but he took four steps backwards, wiping his hand on his pants.
