The bell rang gently, but the calm of Class 9A was almost eerie. At the front, Gyomei Himejima, homeroom teacher and Civics instructor, stood with his hands folded, eyes glimmering with a mixture of kindness and quiet authority.
Gyomei: “Good morning, Class 9A. Today we will explore governance, rights, and responsibilities. Let us approach civics with respect… and care.”
Zenitsu: (whimpering) “Governance… rights… responsibilities… my head hurts already…”
Inosuke: (pounding fist on desk) “I LIKE RESPONSIBILITIES! BRING THEM ON!”
Tanjiro: “We can do this slowly. Gyomei-sensei seems… kind.”
Kanao: (nodding quietly) “I’ll try my best.”
Genya: (sitting upright, determined) “I… I can answer these. I know civics better than anyone.”
Gyomei: (smiling warmly) “Excellent, Genya. Confidence and diligence are virtues.”
---
Gyomei: “First question: What is the primary purpose of government?”
Tanjiro: “To maintain law and order, provide public services, and protect citizens’ rights.”
Gyomei: (nodding, voice gentle but firm) “Well said, Kamado. Thoughtful and precise.”
Genya: “To regulate society, enforce laws, and ensure justice for all.”
Gyomei: “Yes, Genya. You display true understanding. Excellent.”
Zenitsu: (nervously) “Uh… uh… government… keeps people… from… chaos?”
Gyomei: (chuckling softly) “Close, Zenitsu. A bit simplified, but your effort counts.”
Inosuke: “I WILL ENFORCE ORDER WITH MY FISTS!”
Gyomei: (gently shaking head) “Inosuke… force is not always the answer. Use your mind, too.”
---
Gyomei: “Now… discuss the three branches of government.”
Tanjiro: “Legislative, executive, and judiciary. They make, implement, and interpret laws.”
Gyomei: “Correct. Very clear, Kamado. Well explained.”
Genya: “Legislative makes laws, executive enforces them, judiciary interprets them. Checks and balances maintain order.”
Gyomei: “Perfect. Genya, your understanding is exemplary. You make me proud as an educator.”
Zenitsu: (flinching) “I… I think… um… legislative… makes stuff… executive… does… things…”
Gyomei: (smiling gently) “Zenitsu… a start. Keep trying.”
Inosuke: “I AM THE JUDICIARY! I DECIDE FATE!”
Gyomei: “Inosuke… please do not try that in real life.”
---
As the students diligently answered, a loud, angry voice erupted from the hallway.
Sanemi (yelling, red-faced): “GENYA! WHY CAN’T YOU FAIL LIKE THE REST OF THEM?! EVERYTHING RIGHT BUT MATH! IS YOUR BRAIN MADE OF STEEL?!?”
Genya: (covering ears) “I… I just… I’m trying…”
Gyomei: (raising hand, voice calm) “Sanemi… please. Civics is not about yelling. We are fostering understanding, not fear.”
Sanemi: (poking head through doorway) “UNDERSTANDING?! HE GETS EVERYTHING RIGHT! EVERYTHING! AND STILL FUMBLES IN MATH! THE UNFAIRNESS IS UNACCEPTABLE!”
